Cycle Tourism in Spoleto and Umbria
Spoleto and all of Umbria offer breathtaking mountain and hilly landscapes, castles, fortresses and medieval villages, waterways, and dense woods that enrich the journey and make cycle tourism in Spoleto and Umbria, a unique experience of its kind.
In the green heart of Italy, there are some of the most beautiful cycle paths in Italy: the Assisi-Spoleto-Norcia cycle path, the Tiber cycle path, and the itineraries around Lake Trasimeno.
In particular, the 52 kilometers that go from Spoleto to Assisi have been awarded as “the most beautiful green road in Italy“. The area is almost completely flat, away from the hustle and bustle of the roa
d, and offers incredible views of the green Umbrian countryside, some of Italy’s most renowned villages and cities of art.
Starting from the city of Spoleto and the Rocca Albornoziana with the two UNESCO sites (Tempietto del Clitunno and the Church of San Giovanni – see my separate article), there are Trevi and then Assisi, another UNESCO World Heritage Site, and many other villages, all perched on sunny hills.
Each of these villages has its own unique charm and its own characteristic, ranging from fabrics to wine, oil, and ceramics, but on ceramics, I will elaborate on a separate article.
For those looking for a trip out of town and a path with some small challenges, I turned to bike experts who recommend the Tiber Cycle Route, divided into two stages: San Giustino-Umbertide / Umbertide-Perugia.
With its 85 km, the Tiber Cycle Route is perfect for mountain biking, especially in the dirt sections and in the more demanding climbs that lead to the perched village of Montone or in the last climb from Ponte San Giovanni that leads to the Umbrian capital – Perugia.
For experienced cyclists with a great spirit of adventure, they recommend the itinerary that starts from Passignano and runs along the shores of Lake Trasimeno. The routes are mostly on dirt soil (about 60%) and are suitable for mountain bikes, fat bikes, or more robust models. It goes without saying that the effort will be completely rewarded by the variety of the landscape that offers unique emotions.

Personally, while walking the different Umbrian paths, I suggest a stop in the beautiful square of Montefalco, one of my favorites, the terrace of Umbria, from where, on clear days you can admire almost the entire valley of Assisi, the largest and the sunniest, starting from the noble Spoleto to the learned Trevi, the colorful Spello, the sacred Assisi up to the capital of Perugia… an infinite bird’s flight.
A good glass of Sagrantino red wine or the lighter Rosso di Montefalco, on a sunny day … and you will forget who you are, what you want, and where you want to go, but only want to stay there … this is a gift from the Gods.
